If you do not blind the eye of your I
You mistake letter Alif for a stick in water
You see two rather than one–
Perfection distorted and broken

If you blind your nafs’ worldly eye
You see the Divine in everything
Then you see through Allah’s sight
All united with the light of Ya Basir

If you do not mute the tongue of your 'self'
You can only speak falsity
The one who does not act as he speaks
Is controlled by the Shaytan

When the word of I is cut
Then you speak Allah’s language
Who knows Allah’s language,
The moment he says “Be,” it is

If you grasp with the nafs’ hands
You steal from the poor and hurt others
What Allah does not bestow on you,
How can you believe it is your due?

If you bind the hands of I
And wait to receive without wanting
If you truly utter the name of Allah
Only goodness will come from your hand

The servant who loves Allah most
Is the one who inspires others to love Him,
And after Allah loves him in return,
That servant leads others to Allah.

When Allah loves you
You see with His sight
He speaks through your tongue
Love will attract love

I am neither Hajji nor Hoja
Knowing not even Alif, Lam, Mim
The one who admits his own ignorance
Can hope for wisdom

I say nothing from myself
I am just a poor Translator
The one who acts on what he knows
Gains Allah as his teacher
